I met Melissa when she stopped by my booth at the Santa Barbara Bridal Fair. Kyle and Melissa met at Cal Poly, so we started our shoot on campus. I went on a campus walk and ended up discovering its photogenic side!
I thought at first of more architectural shots (lots of cool angles, bridges, and modern buildings). The B-school where I teach has a semi-circular side that lends to a flowing graphic backdrop. Then I went to the botanical garden, held my nose (it’s right next to the horse stables), and thought of the possibilities. The flowers are not quite in bloom yet, but we still got some lovely spring-like shots.
Kyle studied Mechanical Engineering and now works (and lives) in Santa Barbara; Melissa studied Psychology and now works with Social Services for SLO County. They met at a common friend’s house party, having lived as neighbors in the same apartment complex.
Sigh! These guys remind me of when Stan and I first met. Starving students . . . future exciting yet fraught with uncertainty . . . These guys also remind me of my own students. They are so young, and so sweet, and so full of promise.
After shooting around campus, we headed over to Shell Beach to the bluff-on-the-edge-of-the-world where Kyle proposed to Melissa. I asked him if he picked that spot to guarantee she won’t say no.
I had a blast photographing these two, and getting hit by my own blast-from-the-past. I love just letting my couples play, and I am honored to be the person behind the camera letting them be and recording their story.
