B is for Bubblegum Alley
That stuff you chew but don’t swallow
Some you blow, and–eww, even borrow
Yup! That piece spitted out long ago
Climbs this abbey-to-gum like ivy
Clingy, clayey, clumpy, crusty
Given the town’s natural scenic vistas, this gum graffiti off Higuera St is a curiosity of a landmark. Local lore says it started after the Second World War as a San Luis Obispo High School graduating class tradition. Other historians date the gum walls’ beginnings to the late 1950s as a rivalry between the high school and Cal Poly students. Whatever this abbey-to-gum’s origins may be, today it draws curious locals, visitors, and even E!’s “The Girls Next Door.” And, yes, there’s room for your chewed-up gum, too.
